What Are Varicose Veins and Why Do You Have Them?

Tired of Pain, Swelling & Discomfort Caused by Varicose Veins?

Varicose VeinsArteries carry blood from your heart to the rest of your tissues. Veins return blood from the rest of your body to your heart, so the blood can be recirculated. To return blood to your heart, the veins in your legs must work against gravity. Muscle contractions in your lower legs act as pumps, while toned, elastic vein walls help blood return to your heart. Tiny one-way valves in your veins open as blood flows toward your heart then close to stop blood from flowing backward.

Varicose veins occur when the valves in your veins malfunction. As you get older, your veins can lose elasticity, causing them to stretch. When this happens, blood that should be moving toward your heart may flow backward. Blood pools in your veins, and your veins enlarge and become varicose. The veins appear blue because they contain deoxygenated blood, which is in the process of being recirculated.

Varicose veins are a very common condition, and they occur in about 50% of people who are aged 50 and above.

Some of the factors that increase your chances of developing varicose veins include increasing age, hormonal changes, medical history, obesity, lack of movement, and pregnancy. Birth control pills and other medications that contain estrogen or progesterone can also contribute to the formation of varicose veins. All these factors can lead to the weakening of venous valves, higher rates of blood flow, or increased pressure on veins, and cause blood to flow back to your lower body.

How Are Varicose Veins Treated?

You don't need surgery to get rid of varicose veins.

For years, people who suffer from varicose veins have been dreaming those words were true. Now, thanks to advances in medical lasers, those dreams are a reality. A medical laser procedure, offered by North Ohio Vein Center, is proven to get excellent results without the pain and lengthy recovery of surgical "vein stripping." Requiring only local anesthesia, the procedure takes about 45 minutes and you can return to work in 1-2 days. Your physician inserts a thin laser fiber into the vein through a sheath and the laser light is emitted through the fiber. While you might feel some unfamiliar sensations, it is not painful. You will notice relief from pain due to varicose veins 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

Why should you seek treatment?

  1. 1. Reduce your vulnerability to injury. Varicose veins stretch your skin, making it very thin and more susceptible to injury and bleeding. An injured varicose vein could lead to significant blood loss.
  2. 2. Reduce your pain and soreness. Chronic and untreated varicose veins can lead to sores and skin ulcers that are very painful and don’t heal quickly.
  3. 3. Reduce your risk of blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis is a condition that occurs when blood clots in a deeper vein. There might be symptoms, such as redness, pain and swelling, but the main concern of deep vein thrombosis is traveling blood clots, which could result in death.
  4. 4. Improve the appearance of your legs. Yes, it’s a superficial reason, but if you treat your varicose veins, then you can avoid the cosmetic complaints of knotty and bumpy blue veins.
